Read your return on ad spend

Return on ad spend, or ROAS, is revenue credited to advertising divided by the cost of those ads. It answers a narrower question than whether your whole business is profitable.

A simple example

Imagine one campaign costs $100 and has $300 in revenue credited to it. $300 ÷ $100 = 3× ROAS. That is $3 of revenue for each $1 spent on ads. These numbers are fictional.

It is not a complete profit calculation. Product costs, payment fees, refunds, wages, and other costs still matter.

Find the campaign view

  1. Choose a website and period.
  2. Open Dashboard and find Where Is My Money Coming From?
  3. Select Ad ROAS.
  4. Compare the campaign's spend with its credited revenue.

Make sure both measures cover the same campaign, dates, and currency.

Before changing a budget

  • Check that spend is present and belongs to the same reporting period.
  • Allow for the time people take to buy.
  • Look beyond a single purchase in a small sample.
  • Consider costs other than advertising before deciding whether the campaign is profitable.

What if spend is zero

Revenue divided by zero does not give a useful ROAS ratio. A zero-spend source may still take time or other resources to maintain.

Bring in spend automatically

Instead of typing spend by hand, connect Google Ads or Meta in Setup, under Import ad spend. The guide Import ad spend from Google Ads and Meta explains how.
