Label your campaign links
A campaign link includes labels that help reports recognize where a visit came from. These labels are often called UTM parameters.
A simple link example
This fictional newsletter link opens a spring-offer page:
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| utm_source=newsletter | Where the visit came from. |
| utm_medium=email | The type of marketing. |
| utm_campaign=spring_offer | The name of this particular campaign. |
Make and check your link
- Choose the page you want people to open.
- Add a source, medium, and campaign name.
Use clear, consistent names. Lower-case words with underscores are easy to keep consistent.
- Open the completed link.
Check that it reaches the right page and keeps the labels after any redirect.
- Use that link in the matching campaign.
Keep a record of the campaign name so you can find it again.
Two useful checks
The first parameter starts with a question mark. Additional parameters start with an ampersand (&). If your URL already contains a question mark, add new parameters with &.
Never put passwords, secret keys, email addresses, or other private information in campaign labels. Links can be copied, shared, and stored in browser history.
You are done when
The final link opens the right page and preserves the intended campaign labels.
