Make report labels readable without changing attribution

Report labels make Sources and Campaigns tables easier to read. An owner or admin can label campaign IDs and correct the displayed source/medium pair. The original data, saved channel, report filters, row grouping, costs and sale attribution stay unchanged. No labels are enabled until you explicitly save rules for that website.

Start from a report row

Source previews opened from a row show the resulting source report name and up to 200 frequent pairs behind that source. If no recorded pair is available, the editor does not guess; enter the original pair yourself or use Settings → Report labels. A source summary can keep its original name when its pairs resolve to different source labels.

  1. Select Label beside a source or campaign.

Owners and admins can start from dashboard cards, Sources tables or Campaigns / Ad ROAS tables. The report’s website, dates and filters stay in place behind the label window.

  2. Check the original value that was filled in.

Campaigns use the original campaign key, even when the row already has a readable label. Sources load recorded source/medium pairs behind the selected row. For example, a Google Ads row can contain google / cpc. Choose a recorded pair if there are several. A new rule starts with an exact pair; enter * only when you intend to include every medium for that source.

  3. Enter the display name and select Add / update draft.

An existing matching rule is filled in so you can edit it. Updating the same original key replaces that rule in the draft and preserves unrelated rules. Check wildcard fields before updating a broad rule. You can still open the bulk editor.

  4. Preview changes, then save explicitly.

Opening the window and adding to its draft do not save anything. Editing the draft requires a fresh preview. Close discards the unsaved draft. Preview undo last save and Apply undo still restore the previous saved configuration.

Add and preview a label

  1. Choose your website and open Settings → Report labels.

Labels belong to one website. Viewers can read saved labels; owners and admins can preview, save and undo them.

  2. Choose Campaign or Source / medium.

For a campaign, copy the exact original value, such as 1641666602, and enter a readable name such as Integrations. For a source pair, enter the original source and medium plus their display names. Add / update draft does not save anything.

  3. Select Preview changes.

The preview lists campaign renames and up to 200 frequent recorded source/medium pairs. Recorded entries means entry events, not unique people or sales. A rule with no current examples can still apply to future reports.

  4. Check the rules, then select Save report labels.

Check that a broad rule does not include unrelated traffic. Reports use the saved names after refreshing. Original keys remain available beneath renamed rows or in the report data.

Bulk paste or edit rules

Open Bulk paste / edit rules. Use one assignment per line with spaces around =, and spaces around / for source/medium pairs. The slash and equals separators are reserved; labels containing those spaced separators should be shortened or renamed. Blank lines are ignored. Each section accepts up to 100 rules.

Campaign values match exactly, including letter case. Source/medium matches ignore letter case. Use (none) to match an empty field. A whole-field * matches any value in that field; partial patterns such as G* are not supported.

Source and medium examples

An exact pair wins over a wildcard. In this example, an explicitly recorded organic medium keeps its organic label; other GADS mediums display as cpc. The star does not prove that those visits were paid. Confirm that the rule reflects your actual marketing setup.

Use wildcard sources or wildcard mediums in one ruleset, not both. Duplicate pairs and conflicting wildcard directions are rejected. Labels apply once; a label produced by one rule is not fed into another rule.

Use only after confirming GADS means Google paid traffic for this website
GADS / * = google / cpc
GADS / organic = google / organic

What changes in reports

ItemBehavior
Campaign namesThe Sources/Campaigns reporting surfaces display the saved readable campaign name while keeping its original campaign key.
Source/medium previewShows the original and corrected pair, including changing click-ID-like medium values matched by a wildcard.
Source summary rowsA row is renamed only when its recorded entry pairs resolve to one source label. Mixed results keep the original source name to avoid relabelling unrelated traffic.
Duplicate readable namesRows remain separate. They are not combined and visitor counts are not added together.
Filters, row order, pagination and cost matchingContinue using original values and existing calculations. Enter the original key when filtering or matching campaign costs.
Other screensCharts, journey nodes, payment snapshots and other source mentions can retain their recorded names. Labels target the Sources and Campaigns tables; they do not rewrite the whole application.
API, CLI and MCP breakdownsKeep raw source/campaign fields and numbers; additive display_source and display_campaign fields provide the presentation names. CSV exports can retain raw values.

Undo or turn labels off

If another admin saves while you are editing, a stale preview or save is rejected. Reload the controls and preview your draft against the current saved version.

  1. Choose Preview undo last save.

This previews the previously saved configuration, including the empty configuration before the first save.

  2. Select Apply undo.

Only labels change. This is a one-step previous-configuration restore, not an unlimited version archive. Undoing again can restore the configuration you just replaced.

  3. To remove all labels, empty both bulk editors.

Preview the empty draft and save it. Reports return to their original names. No visitor activity or sale record is deleted.

Check that your numbers did not change

  1. Keep the website, dates, filters and attribution model the same.

Note the original revenue, visitor counts and campaign cost keys before saving.

  2. Save a label and refresh the Sources or Campaigns table.

The name can change; every row’s amounts, conversion credit, channel and original key should remain the same. Two rows with the same label should remain separate.

  3. Preview undo and restore the prior labels.

The earlier names should return. Live new visits and imports can independently change report totals, so compare the same stored records when checking invariance.

You are done when

Saved report names are readable, original keys remain available, numbers and attribution are unchanged, and you can restore the previous label configuration.
